Meet the Instructor

Meet Dixie

I have a Master's degree in Deaf Education and a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I am really excited about being in the field I am passionate about. I have considered becoming a Signing Time instructor for quite some time now. In November of 2010, Rachel came to Seattle for a concert. It was then that I realized how much I missed signing and being a part of the Deaf community. I made the decision that day to become a certified Signing Time instructor.  Although I am hard of hearing, I did not start formally learning sign language until I started college. I have completed courses through ASL VI, Linguistics of ASL and Sign Systems. I have taught in Deaf Education in grades Preschool to 4th grade.

I am a mother of two beautiful girls. Genevieve was born in 2008 and Alexandra was born in 2011. My oldest, Genevieve, asks to see Signing Time over and over again. She enjoys learning new signs and using them. It has helped tremendously. There were a lot of times where I couldn't understand what she was trying to say, not because I couldn't hear her, but because her speech wasn't clear enough as it often happens with toddlers learning to talk. When I asked her to sign what she is trying to say it clarified what she wanted to say and eased her frustration instantly. She is able to "read" the Signing Time books by herself. This helps build confidence and enjoyment in reading skills. Alexandra is already signing "milk" and "more".

I am looking forward to meeting new people through Signing Time classes and helping others see the benefits that American Sign Language can offer to their children.

Come on! Show me a sign!
